It was 1961 when I was Assistant Chessmaster in Serangoon English School in Simon Road. The little black patch on my right sleeve indicated that I was in mourning (for my grandmother). Later I was made Chessmaster from 1961-1962.

I remember having my team take part in Inter-school Chess Tournaments. One of our favourite opponents was St Andrew's Sec School led by Koh Seh Hian.
Ali Cassim was the ChessMaster of the school then. The following year when ECA personnel was reshuffled, I took over as ChessMaster.
