13: Recalling a Chess Champion
I recall having met Prof Lim Kok Ann at the Singapore Chess Club which was located at the YMCA in Orchard Road in the 1960s. Wow - half a century ago.
I was then in my 20s and just learning to play chess. Later, when Singapore was in Malaysia, Prof Lim rang me to suggest that we go to KL to organise a Pan Malaysian Chess Federation. But it was not to be as Singapore was kicked out of Malaysia. Still, I have fond memories of Prof Lim because of his encouraging and nurturing personality in the pursuit of the game of chess.
At the Singapore Chess Club in YMCA I also met Tan Lian Ann and Giam Choo Kwee, the chess stalwarts of the day. Later Lian Ann was conferred the title of International Master by FIDE.
In 1995 I met Prof Lim again, this time at the Inaugural National Veterans Chess Championship in which he emerged as the Champion. I took 6th placing.( See below for the trophy: )

Come to think of it, William Lim was also a participant in the tournament.
